Springbrook is the Gold Coast hinterland at its best, and from our front door at Boulevard Towers it is about a 55 minute drive to a full day of waterfalls, ancient rainforest and a mountain lunch. This is a one-destination plan: a morning waterfall walk, lunch on the plateau, an afternoon lookout, then the drive back down. Here is how to shape the day so nothing feels rushed.
How long is the drive to Springbrook from Broadbeach, and when should you leave?
Springbrook plateau sits roughly 40 kilometres inland and south-west of us, which is about a 55 minute drive from Broadbeach Boulevard. Most of it is easy highway, but the final stretch up Springbrook Road is a winding mountain climb, so build in a few extra minutes and let the corners slow you down.
Leave by 9am. It sounds early on holiday, but it buys you the cool part of the morning for the main walk, a relaxed lunch, and an afternoon lookout with time to spare before the light drops behind the escarpment. The mountain runs a good five degrees cooler than the beach, so throw a light layer in the car even on a warm Broadbeach morning. Fuel up before you leave, because there is no service station on the plateau.
Which Springbrook waterfall walk should you do first?
Start with the Purling Brook Falls Circuit, and do it first while your legs are fresh. It is a 4km loop that takes about two hours and drops into the gorge to see the falls, which at 106 metres are the tallest in the national park, from below. Walk it clockwise: you descend the 450 steps early and climb back up the gentler gradient, which is far kinder on the way home. The track threads through open eucalypt forest before the rainforest closes in near the water, and the falls are at their most dramatic after rain.
If you are short on time or walking with younger kids, swap it for the Twin Falls Circuit instead. It is a similar 4km but gentler, and its party trick is that the path leads you behind two waterfalls, which children tend to remember long after the drive home. Start that one from Canyon Lookout.
What to skip if the day is tight: do not try to fit both circuits in before lunch. Pick one, walk it properly, and save your energy for the lookouts.
Where do you eat lunch on Springbrook Mountain?
Lunch is easy, because the best cafe sits right at the trailhead. Dancing Waters Cafe at 33 Forestry Road is beside the Purling Brook Falls car park, so you can finish the loop and be at a table in five minutes. It leans into fresh, simple mountain cooking with strong vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and the one guests keep mentioning is the upside-down cake with a coffee on the deck.
If you started at Canyon Lookout instead, Rosellas at Springbrook on Canyon Parade is the closer pick, known for its baked goods, organic coffee and a menu that rotates week to week. And whichever way the day runs, leave room for a stop at The Fudge Shop on Lyrebird Ridge Road, set in a 1930s mountain house, for handmade fudge and ice cream to eat on the drive down.
What should you see in the afternoon at Springbrook?
Save the Best of All Lookout for after lunch, because it is a short, easy 600 metre return walk and the payoff is enormous. The path passes through a grove of ancient Antarctic beech trees, some more than a thousand years old, before opening onto an escarpment view across the caldera to Wollumbin and the towns of the Tweed Valley in New South Wales. On a clear day you can see all the way to the coast you drove up from.
If you have energy left, Canyon Lookout is a two-minute walk from its car park and gives you the wide gorge view with Twin Falls threading down the far wall. It is the easiest big view on the mountain and a good one to finish on.
Then it is the drive back down. Aim to be off the mountain by mid-afternoon so you are not taking the winding road in fading light, and you will be back at Boulevard Towers with time for a swim before dinner. Guests often tell us the contrast is the best part: rainforest and waterfalls by day, then back to the beach by evening.

Can you swim at Springbrook waterfalls?
Swimming is not permitted at the base of Purling Brook Falls, but the walk rewards you with the 106 metre falls viewed from the gorge floor. If you want a rainforest swim on the way home, the natural rock pools lower in the valley are the better option in warmer weather.

The Purling Brook Falls car park sits right beside Dancing Waters Cafe on Forestry Road, and there are separate car parks at Canyon Lookout and the Best of All Lookout. All are free. Arrive before 10am on weekends, as the main lots fill by late morning.
