When is SWELL Sculpture Festival 2026 and do you need tickets?
The festival runs for ten days, from Friday 11 to Sunday 20 September 2026, and this is its 24th year. The outdoor exhibition is free to walk, so there is no ticket to buy for the main event. More than 80 large-scale sculptures and installations line a 1.5km stretch of Currumbin Beach, curated from Currumbin Alley down to Flat Rock at Tugun.
The exhibition itself is open around the clock, but the staffed Information Hubs along the walkway operate daily from 8am to 5pm, and that is where you buy the printed program for $6 or ask which pieces are worth doubling back for. A selection of sculptures is lit between 5pm and 9pm each evening, which is genuinely the best time to walk it. The crowds thin, the light softens over the water, and the pieces read completely differently against a dark beach.
Two weekends fall inside the festival window, so if you want the quieter version, come on a weekday. Some workshops, artist talks and special events carry a small fee, but you can build a full day around the free exhibition alone.
How do you get to SWELL from Boulevard Towers, and where do you park?
Currumbin Beach sits about 15 kilometres south of us, which is a 20 to 25 minute drive down the Gold Coast Highway or the M1 from Broadbeach Boulevard. The G:link tram does not run this far south, so this is a drive or a bus day rather than a tram one.
Parking is the part worth planning. Here is the order we suggest:
1. Park at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which offers $10 all-day parking and sits about 400 metres from the exhibition. It is the most reliable option and saves you circling. 2. If that is full, try Palm Beach Parklands or the streets around Len Wort Park, then walk in along the sand. 3. Skip the driving entirely and use the free festival shuttle, which runs from Currumbin RSL between 9am and 5pm, with the last return at 4:45pm.
Beachfront parking directly along Pacific Parade is limited and fills early, so arriving before mid-morning makes the whole thing easier. If you would rather not drive at all, TransLink buses 767 and 768 pass through the festival site, and we are happy to sort the timing at reception before you head off.
What should you not miss at SWELL 2026?
The full walk runs the 1.5km from Currumbin Alley to Flat Rock, and you can do it comfortably in an hour, or stretch it to a half-day with stops. A few things reliably reward the effort.
The main beach installations are the headline, and the scale only registers in person, with several pieces built to be walked through rather than just looked at. Set aside time for the SWELL Smalls Gallery at Vika Currumbin, 766 Pacific Parade, open daily 9am to 5pm and free to enter, where the smaller collectable works sit indoors away from the wind. Families should route past SWELL Kids Elements in Len Wort Park, a hands-on area running alongside the main exhibition for the full ten days.
If you can only manage one visit, make it a late-afternoon one. You catch the sculptures in daylight, watch the illuminated pieces switch on from 5pm, and finish with the beach going gold. Guided sculpture walks and artist talks run through the festival too, and the Information Hubs have the daily schedule.
Where do you eat around Currumbin during the festival?
You are spoiled here, because the festival strip is also one of the better eating pockets on the southern Gold Coast. For the easiest option, the Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club sits right on Elephant Rock at the northern end of the exhibition, with ocean views, a big breakfast and a bistro that suits families and walk-ins.
For coffee and something lighter mid-walk, The Salt Mill is a laid-back beachfront spot known for its acai bowls and Allpress coffee, a short stroll from the sand. If you want to make more of it and cross the creek, Tarte Beach House sits on the banks of the Currumbin River, a two-storey cafe and restaurant from the team behind the Burleigh bakery, and it is a lovely lunch stop before the drive back north.
Guests keep mentioning how well the surf club works as a base: park once, walk the exhibition, then come back for a meal without moving the car. That is the move.
Should you book your Broadbeach stay early for SWELL?
Yes, and earlier than you might think. September is spring on the Gold Coast, the weather has warmed, and the two weekends inside the festival window overlap with a busy events season across the coast. Beachfront apartments in Broadbeach book out fastest for those Friday and Saturday nights.
