Are you a cinephile? You have to come to this festival. The Gold Coast, the prime filming destination in Queensland, hosts the Gold Coast Film Festival (GCFF), a celebration of film and filmmaking, from April 19 to 30.

For local and international audiences, that’s 12 days of bringing movies to life the Gold Coast way. The GCFF explores various topics and unique approaches in 2023 with a fun schedule of films, events, and debates highlighting outstanding Australian talent.

Here is a quick guide to the GCFF 2023.

Australian Showcase

These Australian movies emphasise remarkable filmmaking skills and the variety of the nation by showcasing unique storylines and compelling characters. Catch The Giants, Monolith, The Survival of Kindness and Sweet As at the Home of the Arts (HOTA).

World Cinema

Watch fantastic films from all over the world with original, unusual plots, including festival favourites, winners of awards, beloved by critics, pictures deserving of attention, and a few feel-good movies. HOTA is showing the following films:

  • Holy Spider (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Sweden)
  • Rodeo (France)
  • I Like Movies (Canada)
  • Bank of Dave (UK)
  • Maybe I Do (USA)
  • The Inspection (USA)
  • Cairo Conspiracy (Denmark, Finland, France, Sweden)
  • Olga (France, Switzerland, Ukraine)
  • EO (Poland)
  • Feminist Riposte (France)

L’Amour: Family, Friends and Lovers

Enjoy cinema’s lighthearted, entertaining side with these French flicks about family, friends, and lovers. Film festivals aren’t all serious business.

In HOTA, you can see two movies, including Champagne! A delightful and melancholy comedy, the movie is set in the Champagne vineyards of France. Patrick has assembled his oldest pals for his bachelor celebration. Everyone despises his prospective wife, which is the problem.

This One Summer is the second film. It is a touching drama about friends, family, and summer vacations. Dune, a 10-year-old, visits the southwest coast of France every summer with her parents, where she makes Mathilde her best friend. Yet, this summer is distinct.

Making Waves

Discover the ocean’s enormous stories and big waves. There are four movies worth seeing. The Endless Summer by Bruce Brown, one of the most adored and viewed documentaries of all time, has a never-before-told backstory.

Next is Big vs. Small, a contemporary fairy tale about power and strength on top of the water and battling monsters underneath it. Its locations range from monster waves in Portugal to the eerie stillness of a far-north, frozen Finnish lake.

Big Wave Guardians is a documentary about surfing and Hawaii focusing on enormous waves, iconic watermen, and ocean safety. The Road to Patagonia is the last film. It is a beautiful, vulnerable, and unflinching collection of love letters within a documentary, first about love between two individuals, then about love between humanity and the planet.

Local Filmmaker Focus

In addition, you may appreciate and support the local feature films made on the Gold Coast and starring up-and-coming and talented filmmakers, actors, producers, and creators. Visit HOTA to see Against the Tide, Red Dust Challenge, and Girls’ Night Out.

Industry Events

Participate in significant industry gatherings to advance your professional abilities, expand your network of contacts, and deepen your understanding of the film industry. Attend the Screen Industry Gala Awards, the Women In Film Lunch, the screening of Sweet Tooth, the REEL LIFE Panels, and the unique event SIPFEST: Gold Coast Film Festival’s Shorts in Paradise.
